Renters Insurance Coverage Information
Our renters insurance coverage is designed to make sure renters like you are prepared and protected in case of unexpected events such as fire, theft, or other damage occurring in your home. The rental insurance coverage definitions below should help you understand the options available in your renters insurance coverage package.
Not all coverages are available in all states.
Personal Property Coverage
Personal property renters insurance coverage protects your personal belongings, such as furniture, clothing, and appliances, in the event of a loss. If you own particularly valuable items, you can choose to purchase additional personal property coverage to provide enhanced protection.
Loss of Use Coverage
This rental insurance coverage is available when you cannot live in your rental unit due to a covered loss. Loss of use coverage pays reasonable and customary living expenses up to the limit provided in your renters insurance policy.
Liability Coverage
Liability rental insurance coverage protects you in two ways. First, it provides for your legal defense against a liability claim (lawsuit). Second, it will pay any court judgments for covered losses against you, up to the policy limit.
Medical Payments Coverage
This rental insurance coverage pays emergency medical bills for anyone injured on your property, or any injury caused by a member of your family or a pet, regardless of where it happens. All bills are paid, up to your renters insurance policy limit, whether or not you're legally responsible.
The AARP® Home Insurance Program from The Hartford can help you evaluate your current rental insurance and identify the coverage that’s just right for your needs.
